Narrative
Music videos often tell stories that have a relationship with the lyrics. If a song is featured on a soundtrack, clips of the movie is usually shown and sometimes the artist reinact bits of the film or pay an homage to it.
Sometimes if an actor in the film can sing, they could also appearin the song and music video. this is shown in Hydrovibes 'Killer Inside ft Shawnee Smith'
Thematic

- The themes usually depend on the genre of the artist
- Heavy metal have a lot of performance themes throughout their music videos whereas rap artists have more street settings and themes and dance routines occour alot with female artists.
- Grave yards symbolise death
- pictures can support or contradict the lyrics in the song
- lighting can help suggest the mood
Other codes and conventions
- Artistic and stylish mise en scene
- Cutting the shots in time with the music
- Expiremental use of the camera is used
- Breaks continuital editing
- digital effects used alot
The idea of specticle
Music videos may be considered to be examples of specticles for the females in music videos, the male gaze theory is placed on alot of videos as you see women in scantily clad clothing and acting in a suductive way, whereas, male artists are to be seen as they are singing staight to each member of the audience while looking straight down the lense of the camera and using 'I Want You' eyes.
Intertextuality
Intertextuality is where an artists references another piece of media, for example: other music videos, films, TV, video games, supermodels and fashion where it be in the lyrics or the music video.
It can be icons instead of people, just like Maddonna in her 'material girl ' video
This is intertextuality
Incorporating, raiding and reconstructing is the esscence of intertextuality. It can be used to create nostalgia and fimilarity towards the audience.
